/10am-1:30am daily. No reservations - cash only.
/This joint is "a slice of SF", i.e. you will encounter the most bizzare
potpouri of SF denizens ever gathered under one roof.
The only place I've ever seen polyester disco, razor blade punk, hardcore
bikers, lads in leather, long hair vegey cosmic karma types, and dressed for
the opera crowd sharing the same establishment.
A demented disc
jock floods about half the floor space with alternate cuts of disco and
punk. The waiters are ready for Halloween year round. One I recall
clearly had a bright orange Mike Nomad haircut, a T shirt proclaiming his
feelings about leather, and a Marine Corps style tattoo announcing carnal
knowledge of his mother. He did bring our drinks and food tho....
I frequented this joint during the three weeks of Grateful Dead concerts
in the Warfield nearby, and highly recommend their burgers of all styles
and their home-fried potatoes. Their beer is cheap and plentiful, and the
half of the floor space farthest from the music is pleasant.
It was always fairly full, but wait was less than 10 minutes.
So next time you're stuck with an aunt from Kansas City out for a visit, give
her a few years of gossip and some good chow at the same time [PAM-80].
If you are a woman, you might have trouble getting served (ignored is the
word) as this is mainly a gay hangout, this has happened to several women
I know on different occasions [PAT-80].

⊗Zuni Cafe & Grill
/1658 Market Street, San Francisco
/415 552-2522
/open till midnight Mon-Sat, closes earlier Sun.
/In a typically unsavory
piece of Market Street is a small storefront offering excellent unusual
food. I've been there four times, and the menu is always different.
There are some staples, such as the black bean soup, and a couple of
categories which persist: grilled food and pastas, with fresh fish and
shellfish offerings in both. They tend to unusual marinades and sauces,
most of which are remarkably delicious. They grill leg of lamb, pork
loin, calamari (delicious), baby chicken rubbed with citrus juices and
fermented black beans (also delicious), skewered scallops, and fresh
fish. I've had pasta with scallops, chilis, garlic, and lime, which was
wonderful. There's pasta with manila clams, more garlic and chilis,
pasta with figs, pine nuts, and garlic, pasta with cepes and
chanterelles. They make the lightest, least oily shoestring potatoes.
In the interests of stability, they now have a more or less constant
menu accompanied by daily specials. The menu includes the soups and
salads, light dishes from carpaccio to some interesting-looking
hamburgers with roasted garlic, and the regular dishes, including the
baby chicken mentioned above and a broiled veal chop with ancho chili
sauce. The desserts are good, but I'm not a dessert man. They have an
espresso machine. The wine list has some interesting offerings at the
usual markups of 50-100% or more.
The decor is early Georgia O'Keefe; I like it.
Dinner is normally in the $40-50 pp. range [JEO-5/83].

/One of the greatest restaurants in S.F. Food and service are impeccable,
measurably superior to Ernie's, its more famous neighbor, at comparable prices.
Food is continental with an Italian slant. Everything is a la carte, so prices do
get high ($20-$50 pp w/wine) but, on both occasions I have been there, I have
left knowing that I had gotten my money's worth. The seafood crepe appetizer,
Caesar salad, veal parmigiana, and chicken Kiev are highly recommended, and
the dessert tray will leave you crazy with indecision. The wine list is extensive,
with a good selection from inexpensive to exorbitant wines from several
countries. Your waiter will gladly help you select a wine if the 10 or so pages of
wine list prove intimidating. The service is first-rate and elegant, but not
haughty or snobbish, as it tends to be in some restaurants in this class. Also

uncompromised Mole Poblano, as well as some well prepared standards.
For $5-$6 you get soup, fish fritter and a large main course
with rice and beans. About 10 tables [LMT-3/81].

/Pleasant formal atmosphere.
I've eaten here often and enjoy it very much. Gourmet
middle eastern. Dinners from $7 to $14 include 3 wonderful middle
east appetizers. Chicken, many lamb dishes, steak, and a good
quiche. Average restaurant wine list (i.e, unexciting but you can get
BV cabernet for less than an arm and a leg) [DEW-2/83].

⊗Hayes St. Grill

/Excellent food, casual classy atmosphere for the symphony and ballet
crowd (walking distance). Reservations a must if you plan to eat before a
show at the Civic Center. Lots of fresh seafood, excellent spinach salad,
exquisite deserts, good wine list, and premium wine by the glass. Pasta and
meat also. Entrees around $9. I liked it a lot [DEW-4/83].

/This is a very nice little seafood restaurant within walking distance
of the wharf area. As is typical of small seafood restaurants in San
Francisco, it gets full early. There is a small bar to one side
and some seating room for people waiting, however. The food seemed
quite good, and the New England Clam Chowder was excellent. I believe
the cook is from New England [DFH-80].
Good seafood, in a nice setting [TRG-8/82].

⊗*Sam's Grill
/374 Bush Street, San Francisco

/Excellent seafood. I prefer it to Tadich's grill: less expensive, and less
crowded. During the week wait time is less than 10 min. Prices around
$9-$10 pp. with entree, wine and crab cocktail. Try the broiled salmon.
Exquisitely seasoned! The salmon and shrimp Newburg, and the fried deep
sea scallops are very good too. Wine selection ok. Basically Californian
wines [JP-79, LES-72:82].

advantage in the area [AZB-80].

/Friendly, noisy, very good. Half-hour waits are typical [LES-69:80].
Get drunk in good company waiting for your table; plain cooked seafood and broths
are excellent; sauces not so good. Old style brass and mirrors, pre-earthquake
decor, postwar Jugoslavian waiters. Once was possible to steal the silver
coffeepots, but no longer I think. Stick around, you'll like it [DCL-69:76].
Excellent value. Simply prepared local %2fresh%1 fish. Best American style
[SAJ-79].

⊗The Waterfront
/Pier 7 - Embarcadero at Broadway, San Francisco
/415 391-2696
/
/Pleasant formal atmosphere with nice view. Food was quite good
if not outstanding, service mediocre, wine list had a good selection
and was expensive but not outrageous. It's an "in" spot (with the natives),
and I thought a little too expensive for what I got, but you pay for the
chic. Lots of seafood ($12) and pasta ($8). Nice experience but I'm not
running back [DEW-6/82].

/Sunday brunch is cheap ($4.95 pp), and very nice. Atmosphere is
also very good. Looks like a good place to go when the Pacific
Cafe (which isn't far away) is too crowded [JED-7/82].

fantastic, garlicky Whole Roast Crab ($8.50), which makes a great
appetizer for four. Otherwise, nice enough but not exceptional meat and
veggie dishes. The banana fritters for dessert make a nice finish [LMT-3/81].
